Would be suitors planning to pop the question this Valentine’s Day, will now be able to access some of Yorkshire’s most romantic settings, including Whitby Abbey, which recently topped a nationwide poll as the most romantic ruin in the country.
As well as Whitby Abbey, English Heritage will be opening Scarborough Castle, Mount Grace Priory, Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey, in case anyone wants to use their sites to propose.
Visitor operations manager, Jamie Marshall, comments, “It’s clear from the poll that people love historic sites and the romance of the ruins so we are bracing ourselves for a popular Valentine’s Day this year!”
To help Cupid on his way, English Heritage will be giving out heart-shaped chocolates to all romantic couples visiting Whitby Abbey throughout this weekend and on Valentine’s Day. And, if any couples get engaged at one of these sites on Valentine’s Day, English Heritage will give them a season ticket* so they can celebrate their romance all over Yorkshire! *Terms and conditions apply.
All English Heritage’s Moors and Coast sites will be open on Valentine’s Day from 10.00am to 4.00pm, in addition to normal winter opening hours. For more information and admission prices, please call 0870 333 1181 or visit
