Fans of Whitby Abbey are celebrating, after the site was shortlisted by a national magazine as one of the 10 most romantic ruins in the UK, with English Heritage launching an on-line campaign to secure sufficient votes for Whitby to be named number one!
A panel from BBC Countryfile Magazine, including John Craven and Jules Hudson, shortlisted ten ruins, including Whitby Abbey and fellow English Heritage sites, Kenilworth Castle and Dunstanburgh Castle for the accolade
Intrigued as to why the British countryside has some many evocative historic remains, the Countryfile team want to explore why so many of us love to visit the crumbling remains of our past.
As John Craven says: “Is it by the impact they have on the landscape, the legends that surround them and the part they have played in our nation’s story, or is it simply the place they have in our hearts? How tumbledown should they be, how spectacular, how windswept, how threatening, how magical?”
Jamie Marshall, visitor operations manager for Whitby Abbey, says, “The Abbey ruins mean so much to so many different people, from those who come here to find spiritual solace in a site so important to the Christian faith, to others who love the Gothic romance that the site exudes. It is a site that people visit and fall in love with, it really is a worthy competitor for the title of most romantic ruin!”
Members of the public are invited to vote online at
http://www.bbccountryfilemagazine.com/ruinsvote. Voting closes on 26 November, with the results announced in the February 2011 edition of the magazine.
