Time Travellers Go… Knight Academy, 9 – 13 August 2010
With half of the school holidays already gone, young people’s attention will soon be turning to the subjects they will return to study. But what if their timetable included a morning of sword-fighting and afternoon re-creating the Battle of Agincourt? That’s what is on the schedule of Kenilworth Castle’s Knight Academy, open from Monday 9 – Friday 13 August 2010.
Knight of the Realm, Mark Vance, along with his squire and Lady, will open the doors of his medieval armour tent for the Knight Academy, offering students a 15th century education in handling the mace, sword, flail, dagger and poleaxe – essential learning for any aspiring warrior!
“Training for knights would start young, with nobles taken from their families to start studying from a very early age to ensure that all the necessary discipline was drilled into them,” explains regional events manager for English Heritage, Tom Course. “By the late medieval period, there were several professional trainers who would pass on their expertise to richer knights – rather like football managers today – and indeed, some of the best in Europe would even write training manuals for budding combatants.”
One such manual is the 15th century Italian book, “Fior di Battaglia”(The Flower of Battle) written by Fiore dei Liberi in around 1410, which includes a range of offensive and defensive techniques for both armed and unarmed warriors. Participants in the Knight Academy will be invited to join in a 25 minute lesson taken directly from this text – following in the footsteps of the greatest knights in medieval Europe!
Every afternoon, students – and their parents – will recreate the Battle of Agincourt at 3.00pm. The young knights will take on the role of the English, whilst the adults will play the French, for whom defeat is, sadly, inevitable! Led by Mark and his squire, the battle will take place without using a single weapon other than the imagination, but is certain to leave a lasting impression on all involved!
The Knight Academy is open Monday 9 to Friday 13 August 2010 from 11.00am to 5.00pm. Admission prices are £7.60 for adults, £6.50 for concessions and £3.80 for children, or £19.00 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children), and English Heritage members get in free. There is an additional £1 charge for every child (member and non-member).
