Lights dance at Clifford's Tower for Illuminating York

A metre-wide mirror ball at Clifford’s Tower in York has transformed the courtyard of the historic site into a stunning open-air ballroom, in preparation for this week’s Illuminating York festival (26 – 29 October 2011).

Clifford’s Tower will be opening each evening during the festival from 6.00pm to 9.00pm (last admissions at 8.30pm) offering a fantastic location to look over the city’s lights from its ramparts. Visitors will also be able to take advantage of the dancing lights reflecting off the mirror ball to wander – or dance – around the courtyard.

Indeed, York’s own competition-winning ballroom dancers, Michelle and Trevor Daniel-Martin, took advantage of a preview evening to take a look at York’s only alfresco ballroom! Trevor and Michelle have been competing in regional and national ballroom and Latin American competitions around the country for around four years. They train five times a week taking Latin lessons with Joel Chapman at the Rock Academy of Dance in York and also with London-based coach Mark Lunn, and ballroom lessons with renowned trainer Scott Draper at Drapers Dance School in Sheffield, and compete on the open competitive circuit at senior open level for amateur dancers. Earlier this year, they won the prestigious ‘Champions of Tomorrow’ competition at the highest senior pre-championship ballroom level at Blackpool’s world-famous Winter Gardens Ballroom.

Anyone also looking to trip the light fantastic at Clifford’s Tower is welcome to visit the site from 6pm to 9pm from 26 to 29 October. Admission prices are £3.90 for adults, £3.50 for concessions and £2.30 for children, or £10.10 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children).
