Historic Rochester gets new diameter ProFuse pipe

In a recent project for Southern Gas Networks (SGN), Radius Systems’ specialist installation division, UPLUS, has installed 300 metres of a new diameter of ProFuse PE100 gas pipe.

The 440mm diameter SDR26 ProFuse pipe was first manufactured by Radius for a Scottish project and its successful use led to it also being specified for historic Rochester in Kent, via sliplining an old 18” cast iron gas main. The insertion was carried out by Pipelines Maintenance Centre, part of National Grid and the contractor on site was Morrisons.

As Keith White, team manager at Southern Gas Networks confirmed, Rochester had its own challenges: “We had to work beneath cobbled streets in a conservation area close to the castle, so digging all of these up would have been very difficult. As we were able to slipline quite a bit with new ProFuse pipe, we minimised disruption and congestion.”

There were still a significant number of bends to negotiate around the historic buildings in the city, but the gas main renewal went well and gas flow was maximised due to the new diameter pipe being specified.
