Fabulous forties
take Scarborough Castle back to the war years!
The highs and lows of life during the Second World War will be explored over the Bank Holiday Weekend (29-31 May 2010) at Scarborough Castle, as soldiers and civilians join in a nostalgic event taking people back to Britain’s Wartime Weekend!
Throughout the three-day event, visitors can mingle with Allied soldiers and those they left behind, and even come face-to-face with the Nazi foe, with authentic period displays of vehicles, fashions, food and music from the 1940s.
“For many grandparents today, this truly is a nostalgic period as they remember back to the war-time, feeling sadness for those who were lost, but also a fantastic warmth for the community spirit that made Britain so strong,” says regional event manager for English Heritage, Jon Hogan. “This event will allow them to reminisce, whilst also showing younger generations what their grandparents and great grandparents went through.”
On the home front, visitors can chat to a pair of housewives – re-enactors Warp and Weft – to hear about life at home when your husband was called up, and enjoy the rousing music of costumed trio, The Spitfires as they sing songs from the period.
Meanwhile, the battlefield is also recreated in fire-fights between Allied forces and the Germans at 1.45pm and 3.10pm in noisy, spectacular depictions of skirmishes with firing guns and plenty of explosions, courtesy of the Northern World War II Association and the East Yorkshire Regiment Re-enactment Society.
Visitors can also meet these troops off the battlefield in a living history encampment.
Weather permitting, the action of the Wartime Weekend will also take to the skies, with flyovers by a unique Hurricane “bomber” aircraft on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday – plus a few other aerial surprises, too, to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, in a moving spectacle and tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for King, Queen and Country.
The event runs from 11.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday 29, Sunday 30 and bank holiday Monday 31 May, with the castle additionally open from 10.00am to 6.00pm. Admission prices are £6.50 for adults, £5.50 for concessions and £4.00 for a family ticket, or £17.00 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children), with discounted admission of £2.00, £1.50, £1.00 and £5.00 respectively for English Heritage members.
Prebooking is recommended, with tickets available by calling 0870 333 1183.
