28 – 30 October 2011
The scariest night of your life – that’s how Kenilworth Castle is billing its after-dark tours of the site this October, when visitors will join terrifying tours of the castle ruins that will leave you sleeping with the light on for days afterwards!
The tours have been created for those people who can’t get enough of horror-movie style scares, and would love the opportunity to put themselves in the place of the ‘victims’ of a nail-biting supernatural movie, and promises to be even scarier than last year’s event, which had participants running for their cars!
“This really isn’t a tour for the faint-hearted – it will get your heart pounding, and tap into the darkest fears of all the participants,” says English Heritage’s events manager, Karen Pike. “If you are expecting a fun ghost tour, where people jump out shouting ‘boo’, think again! We’ve brought in a specialist tour company to provide the fright of your life, and we’re even considering implementing a ‘safe word’ which will allow participants escape to the relative safety of the Stables if it becomes too much!”
The tour is based around a series of stories traditionally linked with Kenilworth Castle and the surrounding area, involving spectral apparitions, mad monks and Warwickshire’s own ‘Ripper’! The fear factor has been significantly increased for this year’s tours, following visitor feedback last year.
“We pride ourselves on getting the adrenaline pumping in these tours, so that anyone can start to wonder if they will be the next victim, and indeed, at the end of our 2010 tours, visitors were not only asking when it would be happening next, but also if it could be made even scarier – it is the closest thing you can get to putting yourself into a psychological horror movie, which many people see as a test of how brave and tough they really are!” adds Karen.
Tours run at 7.30pm, 8.30pm and 9.30pm, each taking around 50 minutes, and include a mug of hot soup at the end. Tickets are £16.00 per person and should be pre-booked by calling 0870 333 1183. Please note that this tour is unsuitable for under 16s and those of a nervous disposition. Participants are advised to wear clothing suitable to all weather conditions, and stout boots, as the ground can be uneven in places.
