Saturday 30 April to Bank Holiday Monday 1 May 2011
As Royal wedding fever takes over the nation for the extra bank holiday on Friday 29 April, Rievaulx Abbey, near Helmsley, will be preparing for nuptials of its own as the site turns back the clock to the 17th century to celebrate a wartime wedding in the grand ruins!
For three days, Rievaulx Abbey’s grounds will become home to a living history encampment from one of England’s darker periods, the Civil War, when families were torn apart by loyalty to either King or Parliament. However, amidst the smoke and smell of gunpowder, a happier story of a couple uniting in marriage will emerge , with a 17th century wedding procession and ceremony taking place each day at 2.00pm.
Throughout the three day event, visitors will be able to meet some of the interesting characters that populate the encampment, from Mistress Dowserbella who is cooking for the soldiers as they continue their campaign, to the barber surgeon – a gentleman equally at home shaving your stubble as he is removing limbs and stitching wounds of those unlucky enough to be casualties of battle.
“The English Civil War really was a turning point in military history, as the soldiers relied on both the sword and the newly-developed muskets to wage war,” explains English Heritage’s regional events manager, Jon Hogan. “Throughout the weekend, visitors can see the soldiers demonstrating their skills with both blade and bullet, as well as the longer-reaching polearms, which were used when the Parliamentarian and Royalist troops met each other for hand-to-hand combat.”
The event runs each day from 11.00am to 5.00pm, with the Abbey itself open from 10.00am to 6.00pm daily. Admission prices are £6.00 for adults, £5.50 for concessions and £4.00 for children. Rievaulx’s tea room is also open from 10.30am to 5.00pm each day serving a delicious range of home-made sandwiches, cakes and refreshing beverages.
