Visitors on the up at York's highest visitor attraction!

York’s highest visitor attraction, Clifford’s Tower, is celebrating record visitor numbers over the last three months, with 23% more visitors climbing the 55 steps from the Eye of York to enjoy the finest views over the historic city.

The increase in visitors to Clifford’s Tower is one of the highest at English Heritage sites throughout the company, and has given the organisation renewed confidence that 2010 is set to be a bumper year for the city centre attraction, and indeed, its sites throughout Yorkshire.

“This is great news for the city, as it reflects the higher number of day visitors coming to York, largely thanks to campaigns run by Visit York,” says English Heritage’s regional marketing manager, Nicola Bexon. “Clifford’s Tower is actually one of our smallest sites, but its panoramic views over the city continue to draw the crowds, and our summer event programme looking at gruesome aspects of medieval life should be an excellent draw for the family audience, so 2010 look set to not only match, but also overtake the ‘staycation’ of 2009!”

Another of English Heritage’s North Yorkshire sites that is flourishing despite the downturn is Rievaulx Abbey, currently celebrating the 900th anniversary of the third abbot, Aelred, where visitors have been especially keen to purchase English Heritage memberships.

“We’ve noticed that everyone is being more careful with their cash at the moment, so whenever we run a special offer, people are taking advantage of it,” adds Nicola. “English Heritage memberships are doing particularly well, with people recognising that they can not only have a full year of days out for a single payment, but can even get three free months if they sign up by Direct Debit – two summers for the price of one!”
