Meet the jester at Conisbrough Castle

The silliest man in Christendom will be holding court – or rather, entertaining it! – this weekend at Conisbrough Castle when English Heritage’s official jester, Peterkin, stages two days of fun and frolics within the famous fortification near Doncaster!

For two days, visitors young and old will be shown that there is more to it than meets the eye when it comes to being Britain’s best medieval jester, as Peterkin opens his bag of tricks! Each morning, from 11.00am, children are invited to study the silly arts in Peterkin’s Fool School, a chance to learn about the life of a court jester in medieval England and, of course, enjoy his side-splitting humour!

The fool will also take his life into his own hands each day when he performs “Fee-fi-foe-fum”, a hilarious show that bring together two things that would be dangerous in anyone else’s hands – fire and stilts! And, if your sides have not already split from laughing, each afternoon, Peterkin will be demonstrating that he truly has “Nought twixt the ears” in a one man show that would have delighted Queen Elizabeth… and is sure to please 21st century visitors!

Peterkin was granted the title of ‘National Jester’ for English Heritage in 2006 when the organisation hosted a national search for the silliest man in the country – the first nationwide Jester recruitment since medieval times! Adding an extra period feel to the event will be medieval minstrels, Trouvere, demonstrating a range of traditional instruments, from the lute and harp to the bagpipes, in song and music evocative of merrie England!

Throughout the weekend, visitors will also have the chance to explore a rather more serious pursuit, too, as Conisbrough Castle’s resident archers warm up their bows and help visitors loose arrows at targets in a have-a-go archery sessions.

The fun runs from 11.00am to 4.30pm, with the castle additionally open from 10.00am to 5.00pm. Admission prices are £4.50 for adults, £4.00 for concessions or £3.00 for children, with a family ticket (two adults and up to three children) available for £12.00.
