A lost treasure, a troubled monarch and a noble with aspirations of the British throne – a true story with a plot straight out of a feature film will be brought to life at Beeston Castle on Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 June as the hunt begins for A King’s Treasure!
The legend of Richard II’s lost treasure forms a backdrop to this story of intrigue and invasion, as Beeston Castle turns the clock back to the year 1484. Richard III is on the throne, but England is experiencing troubled times as the Wars of the Roses, between Richard’s House of York and Henry Tudor’s House of Lancaster rumble on.
As Henry waits in France for his opportunity to invade England and seize the throne, he sends his Captain to Beeston Castle to see if there is any truth in the old story of Richard II hiding his treasure on the site before fleeing to Ireland. Will the company of Welsh miners strike gold, or will their mission be discovered by the king’s spies?
“This period really was one of the most turbulent in English history, and with the Wars of the Roses constantly requiring huge amounts of money to support the troops, any chance of finding a lost treasure must surely have been attractive to the pretender, Henry Tudor,” says Beeston Castle’s visitor operations manager, Mark Hodgson. “With Beeston still laying claim to England’s deepest medieval well, there would surely be few places as secure as this clifftop fortification if Richard II did indeed squirrel away his fortune for safe keeping!”
The story unfolds each day from 11.00am to 5.00pm, with the site itself open from 10.00am to 6.00pm, allowing plenty of time for visitors to explore the site for themselves – indeed, eagle-eyed visitors might be the first to spot a hidden hatch or tunnel along the woodland walk – and maybe throw a coin down the well to see if it as deep as legend tells!
Admission to the event is £6.00 for adults, £5.50 for concessions and £3.50 for children, or free for English Heritage members. For more information, please call 01829 260464 or visit
