Meet Richmond's Heroes and Heroines!

150 years of the British soldier will be celebrated at Richmond Castle this weekend (Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 June 2010), as the site pays homage to the men and women who have risked – and often lost – their lives to fight to keep Britain great in two days of re-enactments and living history!

From the Crimean War of 1854 to the soldiers of the 1940s, Richmond Castle’s Heroes and Heroines event will vividly demonstrate life on manoeuvre, with some of the region’s finest historic re-enactment groups, including the Gordon Highlanders from World War I and the East Yorkshire Regiment of World War II.

The weekend will take visitors not only into the minds of soldiers fighting in the trenches of the first World War, but also behind enemy lines in the company of the Special Operations Executive, who will describe life as a spy in occupied France!

“Whilst many people think about war as being something waged by men, we’ll also be looking at the role of women during wartime, from the wives who followed their husbands on campaign in the Crimea to Dorothy Lawrence, who disguised herself as a man in order to become a ‘war reporter’, relaying news from the front line until her arrest in September 1915,” says English Heritage’s regional events manager, Jon Hogan.

Visitors will also enjoy musical relief from the displays of trench life and encampments with marching and music from the Richmond & District Pipe Band each day at 3.30pm.

The event runs from 11.00am to 5.00pm, with the castle itself open from 10.00am to 6.00pm, giving plenty of time for visitors to enjoy the stunning views from Richmond Castle’s keep, or relax in the contemporary Cockpit Garden. Admission prices are £5.50 for adults, £4.50 for concessions or £3.50 for children. English Heritage members get in free.
